I’d like to share with you how my expectations of pregnancy taught me a major life lesson.
After getting pregnant easily with my first daughter I got pregnant right away with my second child. The expected due date of this baby was the anniversary of my mom’s death. I thought for sure nothing would go wrong with this pregnancy. It was meant to be.
When I went in for genetic testing I found out that the baby had been dead for 2.5 weeks. No heartbeat. I had no signs or symptoms of miscarriage. I was still feeling nauseous. I had seen the heartbeat a month before. I was devastated.
This started a major internal journey that took me through some dark times. I was unable to get pregnant after this experience for a long time. I was diagnosed with unexplained secondary infertility.
I blamed myself for not being able to get pregnant. Was I doing something wrong? Why wasn’t I able to get pregnant again?
I learned that in order to let something in I first needed to let go. It was about surrendering. Was it easy? Absolutely not! Did I want to control aspects of what was going on? Yes. But I had already seen where that went. Nowhere.
It was time to learn to trust my intuition; to use a tool I had always had.
I learned many tools to help me get to a place of letting go. You can learn these tools, too.
One great tool to help you let go of expectations and fear around fertility, pregnancy, birth as well as other issues is what I like to call the Island Technique. Once the mist of expectation or fear is gone, it allows your intuition the opportunity to come into the foreground.
The Island Technique is super easy!
- Create an imaginary island in the middle of the ocean.
- Visualize putting expectations, fears or negative thoughts out on the island.
- Create more islands if needed. There is no limit to the number of islands you can create.
That’s it! By sending negative thoughts and emotions to islands, you remove negative energy from your space. Mother earth will compost and neutralize the energy on the islands allowing you the space and freedom to create what you want.
It’s a great way to develop your awareness ~ by noticing when expectations or fears arise and then choosing what you want to do with them.
Have fun with your choices!
